Founded The Choate Group in January, 2004 as a research and communications consulting firm serving non-profit organizations in the areas of content development strategies, knowledge management, research and survey methodologies and grant-writing.

  • Developed Metawrite, an innovative content authoring tool designed for professional authors.

  • Provided content development and Internet strategy consulting services to a wide variety of clients, including The United States Patent and Trademark Office, The North Carolina Community College System, The Samueli Institute, Godspeed Computing, and Searce, Inc., among others.

Vice President/Interactive Media and Strategic Planning

Directed strategic planning for The News & Observer, managed a department of 20, and coordinated Internet initiatives throughout the company. Under my leadership, The News & Observer achieved the following:

  • newsobserver.com was the leading local news site in the market(newsobserver.com and triangle.com).

  • It ranked third in the nation in terms of local market penetration, behind Austin and Washington D.C, according to The Media Audit (2001).

  • newsobserver.com was named the best newspaper online service in its circulation category in 2001 by Editor & Publisher magazine.

1994-1997 The News & Observer Publishing Company

Online Advertising Manager

Led the company-wide effort to publish classified advertising on the World Wide Web and developed several innovative products, that led to several "firsts" for the industry:

  • One of the very first newspapers to develop online-only classified advertising products for local real estate agents and automobile dealerships.

  • The first newspaper to place the full complement of display recruitment ads online.

  • Established a web development team that designed and managed web sites for local businesses and organizations.

Adjunct Lecturer, Communication, Culture and Technology (CCT)

  • Computer Programming for the Humanities(CCTP-713-01), This course provides students with the programming skills required to produce innovative content in the new Web 2.0 world. Students learn to program using the Python programming language, with a focus on developing content-related skills in the following areas: XML, HTML, RSS/ATOM, CSS, the Document Object Model (DOM), content management frameworks and Web 2.0 APIs (Google's gdata API).

  • The Technology of News : Implications for public policy, journalism, and the news business (CCTP-671-01) This course examines newspapers as a technology, as a product that is bought and sold within a broader economic environment, and as a product of the institution of journalism that serves a special role in democratic societies. The Internet has created technological alternatives to the newspaper and it has also radically altered the economic environment in which newspapers operate and this course analyzes the impact the Internet has had on both the economics of the news business and the institution of journalism (See The Technology of News - Course for more information).
